MUSHROOM : A RAW MATERIAL FOR MAKING ORNAMENTS

Mushrooms belonging to order Aphyllophorales are the macroscopic basidiocarps in which the hymenophore is flattened (Thelephoraceae), club-like (Clavariaceae), tooth-like (Hydnaceae), or has the hymenium lining tubes (Polyporaceae), or sometimes on lamellae, the poroid or lamellate hymenophores and not fleshy as in the Agaricales.  It comprises more than 190 genera of 52 families and total 1175 species. They are regarded as a primary wood decomposer in the heartwood of both dead and living trees, resulting in massive financial losses in the logging industry each year. It is estimated that one-third of the annual timber harvest is lost due to rot. Because of their woody structure and appealing fruit bodies, these mushrooms can be used as raw material for creating decorative articles and establishing a mushroom ornament industry alongside to improve the economic situation of indigenous populations. For this purpose, mushrooms were collected from the field, after that these were cleaned and dried in the sun. These were then disinfected with 2% mercuric chloride solution to prevent contamination. Finally, dried mushroom sporocarps were painted and varnished to make the desired ornament.
